Nikon AW110 Review

This is the first time I’ve done a review of a product on my website so here goes. The reason I’m doing this is that most of these underwater camera reviews have a few pictures and most of them are actually above water pictures or they will stick the camera in a glass of water and show you. I wanted to write this from the aspect of actually using it on a real vacation.

Before I actually start the review I want to give a little bit of a back story. Last year my wife and I took a vacation to Maui without our kids. Before we went, I borrowed a Canon underwater camera from one of my coworkers. It was great having a camera that I could use anywhere, especially underwater. It was my first time snorkeling and it was amazing. Being able to take some photos and video of what I was seeing was a unique thing to be able to do. There was however one thing I didn’t realize about this type of camera, even a tiny piece of sand that gets in any of the openings, in this case the battery door, has the potential of causing a leak and ruining the camera. This is exactly what happened to me. I opened the camera up on the beach one day and the next day when I jumped in the water the screen shorted out and the camera was dead.

Fast forward a year. We decided to go back to Maui but this time with our kids. I knew I wanted an underwater camera again but didn’t want to borrow one from someone so we decided to purchase our own. After doing a lot of research I decided to buy the Olympus Stylus TG-2 iHS. I chose this camera because as a professional photographer it had some cool features, like the option to add a wide angle lens and a telephoto lens. I got it and started using it and I thought the picture quality of it was terrible so I returned it. The picture quality was like a point and shoot from 10 years ago.

I started looking for another camera and settled on the Nikon COOLPIX AW110. As a professional photographer I’m used to image quality where you can see every detail in the picture. This camera was much better than the Olympus one but still not what I’m used to. This isn’t to say that I wouldn’t recommend this camera to someone, I absolutely would. It has a lot of great features like GPS (so you can easily see exactly where you took your pictures), HD video recording, panoramic (which is a real nice feature while in a place like Maui). One of the coolest features it has is built in WIFI. Initially I thought I would be able to connect the camera to WIFI and put my Facebook username and password in the camera and be able to upload my pictures but that’s not what it is at all. It turns out that when you turn WIFI on it actually turns your camera into a hotspot. Then on my iPhone or iPad it would show up as a WIFI connection and I would connect to it. After I was connected I would open up the free Nikon app and I could see and download all the pictures on my cameras card or you can actually use it to take pictures. When you are in picture mode you can see what your camera sees and click the camera to take a photo. It’s really nice because you can easily get the pictures off the camera without a computer and upload them to Facebook. A couple of notes, which are not unique to this camera, whenever you have GPS on it will chew through your batteries very quickly. Because of this I would recommend doing what I did and buy a few extra batteries that are charged and ready to go. I bought this Wasabi Power Battery (2-pack) and Charger and they worked well. I didn’t notice a difference in how long the charge lasted as compared to the Nikon version but they are much cheaper and comes with a different type charger. The charger that comes with the camera is strange to me. I actually has about a 6 foot cord that you plug into the actual charger. I prefer the ones that are smaller and the whole thing plugs into the wall. The other thing that is a must on this type of camera is a strap that floats. The strap that comes with this camera is a standard point-and-shoot strap. If you took the camera in the water and accidentally let go of the strap it would sink and if you are in the deep ocean you may never see it again. I bought this Chums Camera Float and tested it a few times and it keeps this camera floating at the top of the water. Now down to the important thing. Below are some sample pictures that I took on our trip.

Overall, the camera was great. There are a couple of other similar cameras out there that I wish i was able to compare this too but as far as features, this was the best I could find. One of the things I didn’t mention is this camera can go deeper than any of the other cameras I could find, 59FT! So if you are a scuba diver this should work for you too. The standard right now seems to be 33ft for most camera’s in this class with a few allowing you to go a little deeper.

Houston Wedding Photographer // Autumn + Jono Wedding

I know I’ve said it before but the most expensive weddings are not always the best and this wedding proves that. Sometimes when you talk to a bride and groom and they say that they have a very small budget it can be a little scary. But, when they know where to spend the money and where to not spend the money then you can get a beautiful elegant wedding like this one. As beautiful as the wedding was, my favorite part was their first look at the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens. The schedule we setup for the Autumn and Jono worked out perfectly and allowed us to get all of these wonderful shots at the gardens. Autumn and Jono are two wonderful people who really have a good handle on their future. They are getting ready to move to Wyoming to help start up a new Church. I know their friends and family are so proud of them for this path that God is leading them on. One day, after they start a family, maybe we can go visit them in Wyoming and take picture of their family at their thriving Church. I hear it’s a beautiful picturesque place.

Houston Wedding Photographer // Autumn’s Bridal Session

I was excited about this bridal shoot because I’ve known Autumn’s fiance a long time but wasn’t able to shoot their engagement pictures. Because of this, this was my first time to really meet and get to know Autumn. She drove all the way from Waxahachie to Tomball to have these done and I think it was worth it. She was so much fun and a little ball of energy. I am amazed with how natural some people are in front of the camera and Autumn was no exception. I think she would have tried anything we would have asked, well anything as long as the dress didn’t get dirty. We actually went to 3 different locations for these shots and all of them turned out great. By far my favorite one was the one with her sitting in the gazebo with her shoes off and her head in her hands. It’s always a compliment when someone tells you that you really captured their personality, which Autumn told me that were able to do that.

Tomball Maternity Session // Amber + Nick

Last weekend I went out and took maternity pictures of my neighbors in Tomball. We’ve been friends for a few years and when we found out Amber was pregnant we knew we wanted to take her maternity pictures. The bad part about maternity pictures is the 6-8 month wait to be able to take them. When we originally scheduled the session we were going to do it a park that we’ve shot at many times. As we looked at different picture ideas and all I told Amber, “I wish we had a nice big field to take your pictures at”. Next thing I knew she said Nick has a friend with a lot of property with fields, fences, a pond and a bridge. They were going to check with them to see if we could use their property and I’m so glad they did. These pictures are by far the favorite maternity session I’ve done. I was happy to be able to capture their personality so well. Usually guys are the hardest to get relaxed and to give a real smile so the triumph of this session was the real smile we were able to capture of Nick.

Houston Wedding Photographer // Devin + Chase Wedding

This was a wedding I’d been looking forward to for a long time and it surely didn’t disappoint. People in other parts of the country probably think that as a Houston Wedding photographer most of our weddings are country, but if you are from here you know this isn’t the case.Devin has been a family friend for so long we consider her family. I even remember the day she met Chase. He was visiting our church with his band for VBS and she noticed him right away and was smitten by him. Their relationship blossomed, he proposed and the rest is history. Their wedding was beautiful and truly one of a kind. The wedding was actually in the gym of their church but while taking pictures of the ceremony I felt like they were being married on a country porch. It was breathtaking! Then all of the lights strewn from the ceiling it was an awesome transformation of the gym. You really did forget where you were. After they left the church in a mass of bubbles I got to go to Nacogdoches one more time to take their pictures as a couple. It is such an amazing city to take pictures in. The thing I was most happy with, is this is the first wedding where I’ve done a day of slide show. This is where I do some quick editing of the pictures from the day and do a slideshow at the wedding. I wasn’t sure if I could pull it off but I was able to.

Houston Wedding Photographer // Devin’s Bridal

As I sit here writing this post up I still have a month until I can actually put this on my blog and that day can’t get here soon enough. This was definitely a one of a kind shoot that will never be duplicated. We started out in Waxahachie, Texas.  It is the oldest city in Texas. It has so many great places in town to take pictures at.  The town square is beautiful! Taking pictures of someone like Devin is always a thrill. I had to give her very little direction and she was so natural in her poses.  After we left the city we took a little trip out of town and that’s when the fun really began.  This was the first time I’ve had to dodge cow patties while following someone in a wedding dress.  This was also the first time I’ve seen a bathtub in the middle of a field. I also had to leave my car behind one time because my car couldn’t go where we were going. All in all it was an awesome day and it was totally worth it for the pictures that we were able to capture.
